August is vacation time, and many of us are currently enjoying some well-deserved days of rest. It's a time of longer days and nights, with later bedtimes, more food or alcohol indulging, as we take advantage of the time we have to be with our family or friends. Many end this period with a strong sense of guilt for all the "sins" they committed and quickly want to make up for them. And so, September begins: the kids go back to school, and parents start paying for gym memberships again, thinking that's what will force them to go more regularly. Get ready, kids! The fridge will have much less fun stuff at that time! Is there really a reason for this? I think not, definitely not. There should be room for indulging during vacations, of course, but also throughout the rest of the year. It's important to keep this in mind; otherwise, we can completely derail during these periods of rest. In a balanced way, it's possible to have moments of relaxation that bring us great pleasure and even help with our recovery and overall happiness, while maintaining high performance when it's needed. So, relax during your vacation and take the opportunity to disconnect, but maintain some balance. If you enjoy eating and having larger meals with your friends, go for it, but try, for example, to have them more at lunch. If you do it at dinner, keep them as far from bedtime as possible. The same goes for alcohol consumption. In the midst of it all, be mindful of what you consume. Savor what you eat and recognize when you're getting full; Keep up some physical activity. Even if the levels aren't your usual, do something; Enjoy the evenings with friends and family, but don't completely throw them away. Try to go to bed within a window of 1 to 2 hours later than usual if necessary, and use the same system for your wake-up time.
Throughout the rest of the year, it will be essential to maintain a balance between leisure, rest, and work. Start by planning your days backward: first, define your bedtime according to your sleep goals; then schedule your leisure and relaxation time with your family or friends; and only afterward, fit in your professional obligations; Divide your week: at the beginning of the week, decide how much time you want to dedicate to yourself, your family, friends, and work. After that, organize yourself and stick to the defined periods. Always try to have small moments of relaxation throughout the day.
Sometimes we slip up and feel like we're falling short: it's normal not to meet those exercise periods we had planned or to sleep in later. The important thing is that it doesn't happen two days in a row. Did it happen once? Don’t worry. Let's make sure it doesn't happen again tomorrow to avoid getting into a vicious cycle. And above all, during moments of leisure, whether it's 5 minutes between two meetings or a 2-week vacation, we should be fully aware that these are times to relax and simply enjoy them to the fullest. Have a great week! Prime Human Performance
